Qualification
(a) Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known). OR Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 45% marks and 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known), in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure), Regulations 2002. OR Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and 4-Year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) OR Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and 2-Year Diploma in Education (Special Education) AND (b) Pass in Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), to be conducted by the appropriate Government in accordance with the Guidelines framed by the NCTE for the purpose. (5% relaxation of marks for SC/ST (P)/ ST (H)/OBC/MOBC & Physically handicapped candidates.)

The Directorate of Elementary Education, Assam was established as a separate establishment in July, 1977, with its Head quarter at Kahilipara, Guwahati – 19, for management of Elementary Education to achieve the following objectives.
1. To decentralize management at schools up to Block level, and
2. To organize activities towards attainment of universalization of Elementary Education (UEE).
Earlier this Directorate was belonging to erstwhile Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) functioning independently for Assam in 1947.
