Ludhiana is one of the densely populated cities in the state of Punjab. The population of the city accounts to 13.98 lakhs in the year 2010, which is the largest city in the Punjab. Population of the city is found to be growing substantially due to continuous immigration of labourers from other states during the harvest season. It is located at the distance of 100 kms from the capital city of the Punjab, Chandigarh. Ludhiana is the Asia’s major bicycle manufacturer and the major agro-foods producer and dairy products packaging. Educated people in the city are found to be lesser on par with the population. Labourers are hired by the State government of Punjab, during the harvesting season, where no educational qualification is insisted to get hired. This is a contractual job and during the harvesting season, labourers are provided with rent free food and accommodation, in addition to regular salary/ payment. People with educational background on agricultural and dairy products can easily get enrolled into the government jobs in the agricultural division. Further, there is a good opportunity in the highways department.
